Hyper KANAKO is debris flow simulation system.
The system uses the debris flow simulator KANAKO 2D equipped with GUI based on Takahashi model.
User can easily produce appropriate landform data for simulations using LP data and visualize the results using a GIS.

In Hyper KANAKO workshop, developers and users work on together to use and improve debris flow simulations and for proposing effective countermeasures.

Outline

Background

Debris flow simulations are useful tool for followings;

  • Predicting the disaster influence area, hazard mapping
  • Planning effective sabo dams and evacuation plannings

Many simulation models and programs have been developed

For example, KANAKO 2D , free open debris flow simulator

  • Effective GUI equipped
    • Setting input data using mouses
    • You can check input data(landforms, hydrographs, sabo dams setting), and output simulation results(erosion/deposition, flow depth, discharges) on display screen
    • Simulation process can be checked from animations
  • Combining the proposed models, and also modifying them, users can simulate wide range of sediment transports on one system
    • From debris flows, sediment sheet flow(or immature debris flows), and bed loads
    • Users can set sabo dam types (closed and open), and numbers, installation

Problems on KANAKO 2D
When simulating actual sites or debris flows, user need to set landform data

  • Users can set landform data using topographic maps, manually or using some software, such as Surfer
    • But it takes time and data acquired from topographic maps, resolution is not so much high
  • For getting good results, using high resolution data such as DEM(Digital Elevation Model)will be necessary
  • In Japan, these days we can get 5 m mesh DEM data from Geo-spatial Information Authority of Japan(GSI). And for sediment disasters designated areas and for places sediment disasters occurred, local governments or sabo offices usually get high resolution such as 1 m mesh DEM data, recently.
    • For extracting the data needed for simulation from DEM, and convert for certain format, special technique is required

Tools were limited to use DEM data for debris flow simulations

Study aims

For conducting detail debris flow simulations in 2D

  • Simulation system easy to use have been conducted
  • High resolution landform data have measured widely

Therefore, we developed following system

  • Applying high resolution DEM data for setting landform conditions
  • Based on GIS platform (initial version was on MapWindow but current version is using QGIS)
  • Combined system for running debris flow simulation easily and in high accuracy
    • Simulation part is based on Kanako2D

We named the system Hyper KANAKO

To become a member of Hyper KANAKO Workshop

Hyper KANAKO is kind of share-ware software. For Japanese users, 1 licence is 10,000 Japanese yen. We are charging not for making profit, but because we need some fund for developing and updating the system, and also for supporting users.

For oversea users, please contact us from お問い合わせ(Query Form). And when contacting, please let us know which country or region you want to simulate.
And the aims for the simulations, such as using for academic or research, or for commercial use.
